Why do Christians sing together? The power of corporate worship.

If you have attended a church service before, you probably have seen how Christians stand and sing various songs together. If you have been around the church for a while this might be normal to you but have you ever sat down and really thought "why do we sing?"

The answer is pretty simple, Romans 12:1-2 says,

1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

As Christians, we offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God. One way to do this is to spend time using our bodies to worship the Lord. This is why when believers gather, we spend time singing to the Lord. We use this time to reflect and praise God for all that He does for us.

From Him, to Him, and through Him all blessings flow. Colossians 3:16 answers why Christians sing. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

We sing to each other and to God:

Psalm 95:1 teaches us that singing as a gathering of believers is not just for God, but for those around us as well.

Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

When we sing together, we enourage one another through our singing. If there are burdens in our lives, we can come together with our brothers and sisters in Christ and be encouraged by their faith and worship.

Corporate worship serves many purposes. It serves to lift up God's name, to encourage the body of Christ, and to reflect on God's great mercy, love, and compassion.
